Bajardo (aka Baiardo), is a comune in the italian Province of Imperia in the region of Liguria. It has approx. 306 inhabitants. It is located about 110 km southwest of town Genoa and 25 km west of town Imperia.
There are nice remains of the very old church of San Nicolò.

Bajardo is a medieval village that is elevated at 900 m on a peak of the basin of the Nervia torrent.

Bajardo History

It was first ruled by the Counts of Ventimiglia, then it passed under the rule of Marquis of Ceva and after went under Genoese control back in 1259. Than it remained with Genoa til 1815 when it was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The church of San Nicolò da Bari in Piazza Parrocchiale [5] was built in 1893 and replaced the old church that was destroyed by the earthquake in 1887.

Every year there are various festivals held in Baiardo. One is in June an event from hundreds of years ago. Another one of the ruling lords was dedicated to a woman. The women was youg and had a secret lover. One day they tried to escape into the woods. The rich lord sent soldiers for them. She was decapitated. What happened to her secret lover is unknown. Bairado holds also a tree-cutting festival every June. The citizens setup the tree in the central square, have many festivities during the day, and then chop the tree down.

San Remo (Sanrœmu in Ligurian) is a small city with approx. 57,000 citizens on the Mediterranean coast of western Liguria in north-western Italy.

It was founded during Roman times and these days it is a very popular tourist destination on the Italian Riviera. The city hosts many cultural events such as the Sanremo Music Festival or the Milan-San Remo cycling classic arrival.

The name of the city is a phonetic contraction of Sant'Eremo di San Romolo, which refers to Romulus of Genoa, the successor to Syrus of Genoa. In Ligurian his name is San Rœmu. The spelling San Remo is on all ancient maps of Liguria, the ancient Republic of Genoa, Italy in the Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy. It was used in 1924 in official documents during Fascism.

San Remo enjoys nice weather conditions throughout the year due to its location on the Mediterranean Sea coast and the Maritime Alps right behind the town. Monte Bignone, the highest peak, is some 1,300 m above the sea level.
So the climate is often described as one of 'perpetual spring', with warm days and chilly nights and little variation of temperature around the year. These conditions make San Remo one of the most attractive tourist destinations on the Italian Riviera.

There is a lot of tourist attractions open year-round and it has numerous sports facilities, like a golf course and a riding ground. There are also two harbours, Porto Vecchio and the modern Porto Sole.

Many boutiques and local shops are in the centre. The colourful market, held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in Piazza Eroi Sanremesi, is popular among the people living in the Italian and French Riviera.

Alassio

Alassio is a town and comune of Liguria Riviera, Italy, on the Gulf of Genoa coast, in the province of Savona.

It is mainly known as a health resort in winter and as a bathing-place in summer with many hotels.

The town was settled in the Middle Ages when valley inhabitants started coming down to the sea to fish. According to the old legend, the name comes from Adelasia, daughter of Emperor Otto I.

Control of the town was taken by the monks from the island of Gallinara and after them by the commune of Albenga.

The English composer Elgar wrote a concert overture named "In the South (Alassio)" during his holiday in Alassio in the winter of 1903/04.

The Italian Riviera, or also called Ligurian Riviera (Italian Riviera ligure) is the coastal strip between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain of the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. It extends from the France border and the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur) near Ventimiglia to Capo Corvo (aka Punta Bianca) which marks the eastern end of the Gulf of La Spezia close to the border with Tuscany. The Italian Riviera includes nearly all of the coast of Liguria.

The Italy Riviera is centred on the port of Genova, which divides it into 2 main sections: the Riviera di Ponente, from Genoa to the French border; and the Riviera di Levante which is between Genoa and Capo Corvo.

There is particularly mild climate which, together with the charm of old fishing ports and the beauty of country landscape, it became a very popular destination for travellers and tourists from around the world since the time of Byron and Shelley.

Many villages and towns in the riviera area are internationally well known, such as Portofino, Bordighera, Lerici or the Cinque Terre.

The part of the Italian Riviera di Ponente located on Savona, is called the "Riviera delle Palme" (which means the Riviera of palms); the part located on Sanremo, is named the "Riviera dei Fiori", after the long-established flower growing industry.
